  • A Letter to my Granddaughter regarding the Election of Donald Trump

    Dear G,

You don’t know this, but America has elected a new president, Donald J. Trump.

This letter is for you to read in ten years or so. At age 5, you are much too young to understand the events of the past 8 years, or what happened during the run up to the election of Mr. Trump.

In fact, you and your brother have no idea that an election even took place. This is in contrast to the children of others. One woman went on TV and disclosed that her 11 year old daughter is afraid to sleep alone, now that Hillary Clinton will not be president.

One can only wonder what her parents told her about Mr. Trump and the people who voted for him. Whatever it was, it caused their daughter great fear, and does not speak well of their parenting.

Others, people on my Facebook contacts list, or friends of friends, have posted that they do not know how to tell their children that Trump won, because of A,B,C,D,E or any number of other things they believe Trump has done or will do.

Many of their fears are baseless, because they read them in newspapers that told lies about Trump and his supporters.

You see, the big newspapers and TV news media wanted Hillary to win. And because they no longer subscribe to what were formerly the tenets of journalism, they decided to manage the news.

They lied by omission many times. They also lied outright, or cherry picked bits of truth and spun them into stories that they wanted people to believe, but were actually the opposite of truth.

Many people who wanted Hillary to be president cannot accept defeat. They are currently attempting to overthrow the democratic process, and the peaceful transition of power that has been part of our government since it’s inception.

They have done all sorts of crazy things, including attacking and beating people who they believed voted for Trump, rioting, setting fires, looting, vandalizing businesses, and other crimes.

They have also made it a point to burn the American Flag. This is a shameful thing.

All of this may sound like a scary story, but rest assured, it’s true. I would never lie to you, G. If someday you are in high school and are taught history that does not match what I have written here, do not accept it. I am telling the truth.

Then you will have to investigate on your own. Many teachers did not want Mr. Trump to win. They wanted Hillary, too. Some teachers have even declared that the Electoral College (the system designed by our founders to prevent large population centers in one or two states from electing leaders for everyone in the country) should be abolished.

Never mind that had the results been different, they would be upholding the Electoral College with every fiber in their being; such nuance does not compute when folks have invested so much in any one candidate. Hypocrisy is now the rule.

Hillary lost, and they must blame something other than the fact that she was a terrible candidate who was under investigation by the FBI, among other things.

Again, G, I would never lie to you. The reason I am using only your first initial rather than your full name, is because your Pop Pop and I voted for Mr. Trump.

I have never posted a photo of your face on this blog. Nor have I ever referred you by anything but your first initial.

This is not because I am not proud of you. I am very proud that you are my granddaughter. I hide your face for reasons of privacy, because I don’t want the people who do not agree with me politically to know your name or what you look like.

Because of the way your Pop Pop and I were treated over the past 8 years due to  our politics, I do not feel safe enough to put my own name on this blog or my books. So of course I would never allow you to be known.

I’m hoping the previous paragraph sounds far-fetched when you read it in the future, but believe me, it is certainly applicable now. You have only to do research if you doubt me.

Ask me and I will help you find the resources. Or ask your Pop Pop, or Aunt Allie. Aunt Allie is a college student now, and she will back me up.

Before I write my hopes for you, I need to show you something. The following screenshots were taken this morning, and show headlines of news stories happening today.

Here are the remainder of the headlines.

As you can plainly see, the world is in an uproar. You can get the idea of what is going on by looking at different headlines.

Many people– those in positions of power, with bully pulpits in the news business, in Hollywood, and in the Democrat party–believe things will get worse now, because Hillary Clinton will not  be president.

The current First Lady, Michelle Obama, even went on TV and told everyone who was watching that she feels like there is no hope anymore, because her husband is leaving office, and instead of Hillary Clinton, who would have continued his policies, the voters chose Donald Trump to lead our nation.

But I have great hope. I will write a letter to your little brother, E, and your baby cousin, B, some other time. Today I wanted to write for you, to tell you what I would like your future to look like. So, here are my hopes.

Hope One: I hope the terror attacks will be brought under control over the next 8 years, so you will be safe. Safe to go to school, or to the movies with your friends, or to a part-time job. Safe to play sports or go to dance class.

And safe to go to church. The people who attack do it because they do not want girls and women to do the the things I hope you will do. And they especially do not like our Catholic faith.

Other people (Americans) try to suppress Christianity because it clashes with the lifestyles they have chosen. They don’t like Jesus’ teachings, and they don’t want to follow God’s rules.

These other Americans have decided that they want no restrictions on the brutal practice of abortion, and because our faith forbids the killing of unborn children, they marginalize us and say we are religious freaks.

At some point you will be told that having an abortion is every woman’s right, and that religion is hateful for attempting to remove that right.

When this happens you must ask yourself: What about the baby’s rights? Then think long and hard about it. Do not follow along with the crowd, just because they believe this.

You must think for yourself. Say the Hail Mary and the Our Father while thinking about the horror of abortion, and I know you will find the answer. And again, talk to your aunts if you don’t want to ask your mom or me. They are young, but they know what is true.

Yes, I understand how hard it is for you to believe the above, because you have loved Jesus and Mary since you were only a baby. Each time I picked you up, you would grab my medal and crucifix, and when you were older you always said hi to Mary.

This Christmas Pop Pop and I are giving you your very own “Mary Medal”, because you asked for one. And, you like to pray.

Each night you pray the Hail Mary. I want you to be able to do it for the rest of your life without fear of being attacked for your faith.

Hope Two: I hope that the scourge of heroin is gone from the youth of America. Every day there is another instance of a young person succumbing to this terrible drug.

It is much too easy for teenagers to get, because America at this time is a country without borders. Drugs snake their way into our country, and kids always end up dead.

Please, never, ever think that you can try this drug. You can’t. It will take control of you and turn you into a shadow, someone no one will recognize. And then something worse might happen.

Hope Three: I hope you will be able to be yourself. You are a modest little girl. At age 5 you are already shy, and you don’t want to change in front of anyone but me when I am babysitting.

I am quite sure that you will want to be a little girl who can have privacy. There are some people in America who do not believe girls should have this option, or boys either.

Because some kids and adults are confused about their gender, activists are pushing for schools to allow boys into the girls bathroom and locker room, and vice versa.

When girls complain that they are uncomfortable undressing in front of a boy (even if the boy believes he is a girl), the girls are told that they must get used to it, and that they need to become comfortable with letting a strange boy see them getting undressed.

Yes, I understand that this sounds like the ravings of a lunatic. Nevertheless, it is true. So my hope is that this issue will be settled soon, and that the many kids who feel uncomfortable will not be forced to “get used to it”, just to make one or two kids that are confused feel comfortable.

Hope Four: I hope you do not grow up too fast. The issues I wrote about above are not anything a child should have to deal with.

I hope you read lots of books. Good books that do not push the messages above into your brain until you believe they are “just the way things are.”

I hope you will be kind and smile a lot. I hope you will make nice friends. I hope you will have good health care. I hope you will learn to help others, and that you will grow up loving your neighbor and your country.

I hope that you will have every advantage your own parents had while growing up. I pray every day for this.

There are many more hopes that I could list, but these are the ones that pertain to President Trump and the people he will appoint to help him make our country great again.

I prayed every day for the past 8 years that God would help us–we who want to keep the right to practice our religion without government interference, and our right to self defense, and our right to speak our minds without being marginalized or suppressed.

America is a wonderful place. And now that Hillary Clinton will never be president, there’s a good chance that the headlines above will change for the better, and that our rights will not diminish.

I have all of this hope not because I believe in government, or in Donald Trump, or in any earthly institution or person.

This hope has come from God, and I am thankful every day that He, in his mercy, has given us a chance to change things.

I hope you read these words someday, and know how much I love you, and that I did everything I could to make sure you will grow up to be free.

  • Trump Rocked the Christian Vote. Here’s Why.

As has become apparent over the past week, Trump got more votes from Christians (Protestant & others), Evangelical Christians & Catholics than did Clinton.

First, as proof, I will link to this Pew article: How the faithful voted: A preliminary 2016 analysis.

Below is a chart from the article. As you can see, in the 2016 Presidential race, with the exception of Mormons, a greater number of Christians voted for Trump than voted for Romney in 2012.
Presidential vote by religious affiliation and race

    Where to begin?

I suppose we should begin with the obvious. Christians voted Trump as a referendum on Obama. This is because Hillary Clinton promised her supporters that she would continue Obama’s policies on steroids.

Obama removed conscience protections from people of faith in the medical field by insisting, via Obamacare and the HHS mandate, that pharmacists dispense the morning after pill over the counter to minors.

Obama took nuns to court, to force them to provide birth control to themselves and others who might work with them.

Obama fostered the Leftist ideal of abortion in such an over-the-top manner that Planned Parenthood doctors and upper echelon admins got away with being caught on video discussing their house of horror style selling of aborted baby body parts, and the only person who faced an indictment was the whistleblower.

I could go on. But instead, I will link to the following article by Jonathon Van Maren: The painfully obvious reason Christians voted for Trump (that liberals just don’t understand).

Below is the article in its entirety, links included.

Nov. 14, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Since the election of Donald Trump, the level of meltdown on the Left has now reached proportions rivalling Chernobyl. University students at Cornell hosted a cry-in, meeting together to weep at the fall of Hillary Clinton. As per usual, more hate crimes were faked, and every bit of potentially racist graffiti was pounced on as evidence that Trump’s election would result in vicious race wars. Actual violence and rioting done by angry progressives has been almost completely ignored. And then, the one theme that keeps recurring on talks shows across the nation: fear. As the result of Donald Trump’s election, many people, apparently, feel as if the leadership of the country is now fundamentally opposed to them in some way, and they are scared.

Which is exactly how Christians have felt under Barack Obama for the past eight years.

Many of my non-Christian and liberal friends find it bewildering that both evangelicals and Catholics voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump, a thrice-married casino operator infamous for his vulgar trash talk. I want to take a moment to explain to them directly why most Christians voted for him anyways. It’s simple, really: Christians voted for Donald Trump because they felt that the threat a de facto third Obama term posed to Christian communities was an existential one.

The attacks on Christians from the highest levels of government have been relentless now for nearly a decade. Obama wants to force Christian churches and schools to accept the most radical and most recent version of gender ideology, and he is willing to issue executive decrees on the issue to force the less enlightened to get in line. Christian concerns are dismissed out of hand as “transphobia.”

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton informed one audience that Christians would have to change their beliefs on some issues. And now Christians are having conversations around the dinner table about what do if the government forces curricula on them that they cannot accept, because their own government is increasingly indicating that Christian parents are too homophobic and too hateful to teach their own children. Can you understand how terrified mothers and fathers are at the prospect that those in power want to actively prevent them from passing their beliefs on to their own children?

I can understand why those from some immigrant communities might be worried about how a Trump presidency could affect them personally—but as for the largely white liberal university students throwing a temper tantrum—what do you have to freak out about? No one is saying that you can’t pass your values on to your children. No one is saying you’re a bigoted, fascistic hater of minorities simply because you happen to have a different belief system. But they are saying that about Christians—and you were, too. And they mean it. The students weeping in fear at a Trump administration have nothing to worry about. No one’s going to cancel their Women’s Studies program or shut down their LBGTQ2etc Collective. Get over it.

And then there was the rapid rise of rainbow fascism. Christian bakers are under attack. Christian photographers. Christian pastors. Real people are losing real businesses that they had labored for years to build. Their way of life is being destroyed. In some cases, Christian business owners saw the wages they needed to feed their families dry up because they were targeted by gay activists and labeled hateful, homophobic bigots simply for declining to assist in celebrating a gay union. That’s all. They just wanted to live their lives in accordance with their own beliefs, and because of that, activists came gunning for them. It wasn’t good enough to go down the street to any number of photographers or bakers who would be more than happy to help celebrate a gay wedding. They needed to see those little family businesses destroyed, even if it meant that the baker and his family ended up on the street. Dissenters must be crushed.

These things happened, and are happening, and many of you shrugged your shoulders and thought to yourselves that the homophobes got what they deserved. You didn’t care about these people, and you didn’t respect their right to live out their beliefs because you thought there was something fundamentally wrong with those beliefs.

And then there was the fact that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton wanted to force Christians to fund the abortion industry, something many of you support because everyone babbles on about “reproductive rights” without ever talking about what abortion actually is. Abortion. Google it. I’m challenging you in all seriousness. That’s how I ended up involved in the pro-life movement: by Googling it and realizing what abortion was. Take a second, and actually look at pictures of the dead babies, and then remember that Barack Obama even voted against protecting those children who survived abortion, and that Hillary Clinton defended abortion even in the latest stages of pregnancy.

Is it really so hard for you to understand that those who fight tirelessly to protect these babies might be willing to gamble on the support of a brash billionaire rather than cast their vote for someone who thinks the youngest members of the human family are nothing more than soulless trash? I’ve seen an aborted baby before. I’ve held a butchered little boy in my hands. Maybe if you did, too, you could understand why we don’t think Hillary Clinton is a good person. We think her political positions directly result in dead children, because that’s the truth.

This is not even to get into the fact that the Democratic war on religious liberty was so malicious it had them going to court to force nuns—a group called “Little Sisters of the Poor”—to fund birth control. Dissenters must be crushed, after all.

The simple fact is that Christians voted in self-defence. They voted to put the brakes on the relentless, eight-year-long assault not just on their values, but on their ability to live their lives unmolested without having radical progressives attempt to force some newly invented ideology down their throat or hang some new “phobia” label around their necks or garnish their wages to pay for medical exterminators to suction tiny human beings into bloody slurry. Most of these Christians are not activists. Most of them simply want to be left alone. But for eight long years, they weren’t left alone. And so this time around, they voted to give Obama and his progressive minions the hugest shove they could.

Donald Trump may well prove to be destructive force. Time will tell. But for many people, he is currently destroying all the right things. Michael Moore wasn’t wrong to refer to Trump as a “legal Molotov cocktail” that the voters threw right through the front window of the elites. Secular progressives have been using political correctness to strangle the life out of Christians, calling them every name in the book and treating them like seething, hateful gay-bashers. Now, the media saddled a man with every label they could possibly come up with—and he won anyways. Progressives created a system that would convict Christians every single time, replete with ever-shifting speech codes that informed any number of bewildered men and women that the hate they didn’t feel towards anyone was obviously there, anyways. And then a sledgehammer named Donald Trump showed up, and the harried and henpecked voters decided to use it to smash a system created specifically to marginalize and label them.

What you have to understand is that Christians hear the media much differently than the rest of you. They hear themselves being mocked and ridiculed by men like John Oliver, who believes that a man with a penis can simultaneously be a woman. They hear themselves being cursed as awful people by Samantha Bee, who thinks that it’s perfectly okay to stab a baby in the skull in the third trimester of pregnancy. They hear themselves being called hateful bigots by Bill Maher, who claims to value diversity. And they may chuckle painfully, but they also know that they are loathed by those who are now demanding to know how they could possibly have voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, a woman who would have taken her own sledgehammer to religious liberty at the very earliest opportunity.

We’ll have to see how a Trump presidency progresses. With men like Mike Pence around him, he may prove to be an ally to the Christians who cast their ballots for him last Tuesday. But even if he isn’t, Christians are simply relieved that he isn’t Hillary Clinton. As I pointed out prior to Election Day, most of us are quite aware that Donald Trump doesn’t care about abortion or religious liberty. But on the other hand, Hillary Clinton is passionate about abortion, and she ispassionate about furthering her party’s radical social agenda. Even if Donald Trump does nothing for Christians, at least he’ll leave them alone. After eight years of Barack Obama, that would be a tremendous relief.

That’s why so many Christians voted for Donald J. Trump.

I certainly could not have said it better than Mr. Van Maren. The thought of being left alone by Left wing zealots is a heady one, filled with peace and thanksgiving to God.

To drive home the point of the above article, please click this article from the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ): Christian College Students Denied Admission For Their Faith. There’s a petition attached to bring awareness to this abomination of Freedom, and to aid the students in their legal battles. I signed it.

Universities are engaging in anti-Christian discrimination at an alarming rate.

One state college rejected a Christian student, saying the medical “field is not the place for religion.”

In another of our cases, a college student was denied admission because he “brought up religion.”

This isn’t just outrageous; it’s blatantly unconstitutional.

Right now we’re in federal court to address this issue. But disturbingly anti-Christian discrimination is growing nationwide.

One university student was expelled for her faith, another was told to defile the name of Jesus, and another was failed for refusing to agree that Christianity is false.

How in God’s name is the above even happening in America? We have a right, under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to practice our religion without interference, from government or anyone else, including Left Wing Colleges and Universities.

Of course Christians voted against Hillary! We would have to be the equivalent of Harry and Marv from Home Alone not to!

Sorry, but Leftists might believe we are dumb enough to vote directly against keeping our rights under the Constitution, but hello… we’re not the stupid ones here.

Liberals, please. Look outside your bubble. Your ideology was completely refuted and kicked to the curb last Tuesday.

Please, look inwardly, and ask yourselves why? It may take some time. You may feel uncomfortable. You may even feel ashamed. But for the love of this Country, stop repeating Liberal talking points and fake news stories from the mainstream media and look at the truth.

In closing, please look at the video below. It contains footage of young Leftists/Liberals marching against the democratically elected president, Donald Trump. These kids shut down highways, burned flags, invaded a mall, and trashed private property, all in the name of their ideology.

And Liberals say Conservatives are the haters?

Tell Us Tim Kaine…What is a “Pope Francis Catholic”?

  • Tell us, Tim Kaine… What is a “Pope Francis Catholic”?

Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s VP choice, has recently declared that he is courting the votes of Americans whom he terms “Pope Francis Catholics”, according to this article by Breitbart.

Apparently, Kaine believes Jesuits, or perhaps Catholics who attended Jesuit schools, (especially in Philadelphia) may be “Pope Francis Catholics.”

“Well, Jesuits aren’t that big an applause line in every city, but I’m glad to know in Philadelphia,” Kaine said. “I bet there were a lot of Pope Francis Catholics here before there was a Pope Francis.”

    Pope Francis

Further on in the article we find a possible definition of a Pope Francis Catholic:

To bolster his Catholic credentials, Kaine reminded the Democratic audience on a Saturday that he would be in his home parish at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Richmond the following morning.

“Hey, St. E.’s folks, I hope you’re watching,” he said. “We will be there at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.”

They were, and so was the media, who dutifully reported Kaine’s participation in the Mass and and “sang and clapped along to the choir.”

“During communion, Kaine joined the choir and took the lead singing a solo. He sang the solo parts of a song called ‘Taste and See,’” ABC News reported.

Parishioners stood and applauded Kaine after he entered the Church after accepting the nomination for Vice President on the Clinton ticket.

By citing his more liberal Jesuit education, Kaine sends a signal that he will not stand for the lives of unborn children as victims of abortion.

“I’m a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade and women being able to make these decisions,” he said when asked a question about abortion during a CNN interview in July.

His voting record to defend abortion rights has earned him the support of abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.

“He has been a champion for Planned Parenthood,” Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Cecile Richards said after he was nominated.

So. That must be it. According to Kaine, a “Pope Francis Catholic” is a Catholic Democrat who supports abortion.

    Please. Spare us.

This tendency to pretend that politicians who are pro-abortion can remain in good standing in the Catholic Church has gotten on my last nerve.

We already went through this the last time.

Although Vice President Joe Biden says he is “a practicing Catholic” and believes that life begins at conception — but he would not “say that” to people who “have a different view” — his former bishop forbade Biden from speaking at Catholic schools,  and the bishop for Colorado Springs has said Biden should not present himself for Communion at Mass.

Also, in a document cited by the Wilmington, Del., office of Biden’s former bishop – Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli, who died in 2009 – it states that “Catholic politicians who take pro-abortion legislative positions … should never be put forward as a model of a Catholic in public life,” and “their acting consistently to support abortion on demand risks making them cooperators in evil in a public manner.”

Why, oh why, are Catholics who follow Church teaching required to put up with this nonsense again?

It gets tiresome. It’s annoying and frustrating to read the kind of stupid contained in the Breitbart article.

And not only is Kaine as prochoice as you can get, he’s running with Hillary Clinton, the MOST pro-abortion candidate ever to run for president.

During an interview on The View recently Hillary Clinton said an unborn child just hours before delivery should have no Constitutional rights. Her comments came just days after Clinton said unborn children simply do not have any Constitutional rights, which would include the right to life.

In February, Clinton defended partial-birth abortions: “My husband vetoed a very restrictive legislation on late-term abortions, and he vetoed it at an event in the White House where we invited a lot of women who had faced this very difficult decision, that ought to be made based on their own conscience, their family, their faith, in consultation with doctors. Those stories left a searing impression on me,” she continued.

Clinton has said more taxpayer money needs to go to the Planned Parenthood abortion business and Clinton demonstrated her unyielding commitment to abortion and the Planned Parenthood abortion business, accepting their endorsement during a pro-abortion rally — saying she would be the abortion business’ president.

“I will always defend Planned Parenthood and I will say consistently and proudly, Planned Parenthood should be funded, supported and protected, not undermined, misrepresented and demonized,” Clinton said. “As your president, I will always have your back.”

So, why in the name of anything good and decent did Hillary Clinton pick a Catholic to run with her?

She must think Catholics are complete idiots, since abortion is simply not allowed for Catholics. It is in the Catechism. In fact, abortion is non-negotiable. That’s it. It is considered an intrinsic evil, which means American Catholics should not vote for the Clinton-Kaine ticket if they want to remain in good standing in the the Church. Period. End of story.

From The Voters Guide for Serious Catholics, by Priests for Life:

    1. Abortion

The Church teaches that, regarding a law permitting abortions, it is “never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law, or to vote for it” (EV 73). Abortion is the intentional and direct killing of an innocent human being, and therefore it is a form of homicide.

The unborn child is always an innocent party, and no law may permit the taking of his life. Even when a child is conceived through rape or incest, the fault is not the child’s, who should not suffer death for others’ sins.

Is the above clear??? What is so hard to understand?

So, where did the “Pope Francis Catholic” line come from? It obviously didn’t come from Pope Francis, since he recently made it known to all the world, including Tim Kaine, that the position of the Church remains unchanged.

This is what the papal document had to say about abortion, according to the report:

On the subject of abortion, the document states the church’s commitment to its anti-abortion stance, adding that no woman’s “right to choose” over what happens to their own body can “justify terminating a life”.

It also states that healthcare workers in [facilities that perform abortions] should exercise their right to conscientiously object to abortion.

Did Tim Kaine miss the above? He must have, since he is using Pope Francis to uphold his pro-abortion position. The nerve.

I’m sure Francis will be really thrilled to hear that Catholics who support abortion are being referred to as Pope Francis Catholics. Likewise Jesuits who follow Church teaching.

Biden’s oxymoronic pro-abortion Catholicism has already caused enough problems. We don’t need another VP exactly like him. Having a pro-abortion VP who claims to follow the Catholic faith has already stretched the patience of Catholics who DO follow the faith, not to mention causing confusion in their families.

Damage control must be done regularly, when children learn in religion class that “the Vice President is a Catholic! Yay!”

Now the end is in sight, and a pro-life VP is on the horizon. My friends and I are dreaming of the day when a pro-abortion Catholic will no longer be the Vice President of our country.

And now we must contemplate another one???

    Please watch the video below.

This is the way I feel right now. I cannot stand another eight years, or even another four years of this stupidity. Not again.

This is the most annoying thing I have heard all week. I really hope American Catholics (I mean Catholics who practice the faith, not Liberal Catholics who will pull the lever for Hillary no matter what she has done, or what she intends to do in the future) are not dumb enough to fall for this again.

Don’t be STUPID. Your eternal life depends upon your choices.

  • Good Friday Reflections

Today is one of the saddest, yet also one of the happiest days for Christians: Good Friday.

The name itself seems a paradox. We commemorate Christ’s Crucifixion, a day of unimaginable brutality, betrayal, denial and despair. On that day the sun disappeared, the earth shook, and God Himself was taunted and mocked by His own creations.

So how can it be called “good”? It is good because He Himself lay down His own life, for us, so that we may rise again with Him.

We will never be in darkness. We who follow Christ will be in the Light for all eternity. This is why today is good.

At the Good Friday Celebration today, we venerated the Cross. During the veneration we sang one of my favorite hymns– Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord).

The following version of this American Spiritual, sung by Johnny Cash, is quite beautiful. The legend behind the song is explained by Cash.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord? (Were you there?)
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
O! Sometimes it causes me to tremble! tremble! tremble!
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed him to the cross? (Were you there?)
Were you there when they nailed him to the cross?
O! Sometimes it causes me to tremble! tremble! tremble!
Were you there when they nailed him to the cross?

Were you there when they pierced him in the side? (Were you there?)
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
O! Sometimes it causes me to tremble! tremble! tremble!
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there when the sun refused to shine? (Were you there?)
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
O! Sometimes it causes me to tremble! tremble! tremble!
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

    1899 Old Plantation Hymns

There is also this version, with scenes from The Passion Of The Christ, Mel Gibson’s film portraying Christ’s crucifixion. (Click only if prepared to see a realistic portrayal).

I used to watch this film every Good Friday, but I no longer do. I find it difficult to watch such suffering right now, with all the brutality in the news each day.

I just pray for God to be with all who suffer. He knows the pain of each person intimately. And He is Risen.

  • Review ~ The Ties That Bind: The River Collection (CD/Blu-ray) by Bruce Springsteen

I rarely review anything other than books. However, I wanted to review The Ties That Bind: The River Collection (CD/Blu-ray) (Audio CD) for the simple reason that Bruce Springsteen is my favorite artist, despite being my polar opposite in ideology.

I simply adore the man’s music. And, at times, the man himself. I don’t want to get into the particulars. Part of it is explained below, and the rest? Well, let’s just say that I don’t feel comfortable among his “biggest” fans after being run off of a comments thread by some of them in 2012, because I disagreed with their interpretation of the events of 9/11/12, in Benghazi, Libya.

There’s very little common ground between me (a person who will look at facts no matter where they point me) and certain people very far Left of center, who won’t. Unless, perhaps, some of the people who called me a liar, a right wing nut job, and then insinuated that I (and by association, my family) are unworthy to take a ride on the train to the Land of Hope and Dreams have seen the proof. No point in rehashing this. Hillary Clinton lied and covered up the events of the attack. It’s proven beyond a doubt now. Perhaps some folks will take the evidence into account, but others simply won’t. It doesn’t matter to me anymore. Hillary Clinton will be the Democrat Party nominee for President of the United States. People can vote for her or not, as they choose.

None of this affects my love of Springsteen’s music. There’s just something I’m drawn to. Perhaps it’s the similarity of the characters in the title track of The River to myself and my husband. Maybe it’s the deep down feeling in my gut when I listen to lyrics that describe hard work, prayer, love, heartbreak and fighting to hang on to what you’ve earned. This is what I hear when listening to The Boss.

So, despite online abuse from Leftists, and my tendency to stay away from Springsteen forums, I still love the artist and his music. Think of it this way. What’s your choice in reading material? Let’s say you’re a lover of Science Fiction, Fantasy and, perhaps Thrillers. You love these genres. What happens when you pick up a Harlequin Romance?

This is what happens to me when I become disgusted at a foolish remark or a downright insulting one from the Boss, and vow that I will listen to more Country music, because the artists don’t usually insult my sensibilities like Bruce does sometimes. Example: Springsteen made a statement endorsing Barack Obama in 2012, stating a woman’s reproductive rights, etc. In other words, he endorsed abortion on demand. This statement was on Springsteen’s official FB page accompanied by a photo. In the photo, Bruce was wearing a Miraculous Medal. (You know… that medal depicting Mary, Mother of Jesus? A mainstay of Catholics? You know, those Catholics… the ones whose catechism states that abortion is murder? That medal.)

So… I just compartmentalize this seemingly mind bending hypocrisy, and pray that the medal is something that will help Mr. Springsteen at some point. Then I pop in another Springsteen CD, and get lost in the music. I do listen to other genres, and even some Country Music, but… it’s just not my favorite. My favorite is Classic Rock, mainly Springsteen. However, when reviewing a product, I must be honest. See below.

The Ties That Bind Boxed Set

Following is my review. (4 stars on Amazon). The boxed set is pictured above.

My husband gave me The River boxed set for Christmas. I’m really enjoying it, for the most part. I love the music, and The River is my 3rd favorite Springsteen album, after DOTEOT and BTR. I really am not much of a collector, and certainly don’t own every song Springsteen ever released, so I’m positive I will love all the songs included. I love Bruce’s voice, his enthusiasm, his obvious love for the E Streeters, and the energy of each performance. His music has gotten me through numerous hard times. He’s easily my favorite artist, and this comes from someone who has listened to all the Classic Rock greats since the mid 1970s.

I enjoyed looking through the pictures, and the notebook. I like looking at Bruce’s beautiful, artistic handwriting. Handwriting tells so much about a person. I really enjoy seeing the creative process of this artist.

The Tempe concert is terrific. I’ve only been to 3 shows, all in Philly, 2 of which were during the Wrecking Ball Tour. I seriously doubt any more shows are in my future, so I will watch this Tempe DVD often. My only issue, and folks can agree or disagree as they so choose, is that I was blindsided while watching the concert. Mr. Springsteen has always felt the need to share his political views with his paying audience. I understand that, and accept it. But I must admit that to me, it’s a turn off. I’ve never understood the need for any artist to alienate parts of their audience. The fact that I heard him say to the students in Arizona that he considered the election results of the previous evening “frightening” wasn’t a great moment. More than half the country felt otherwise, and some of them were probably in the audience. I have always found this behavior rude, and I’m entitled to my opinion.

I had to shut off the TV. I made a note of exactly where in the show this statement occurred, so I can FF through next time. This is the only reason I’m not giving this collection 5 stars. For me, a 5 star review is reserved for material that doesn’t broadside me with insults. Other than this I love the collection, and I would recommend it to people like me, who haven’t seen shows in double digits and don’t own a lot of rare songs.
