For ten years now I have regarded Progressive Democrats as modern day Pharisees.
And today while praying the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary I was reminded again how true it is. First a little background on the Rosary and the Pharisees.
The Rosary is a meditation and prayer on key events in the life of Jesus Christ. The main body of the prayer is made up of mysteries that are meditated upon while praying ten Hail Marys. On Tuesdays and Fridays the mysteries prayed are the Sorrowful mysteries consisting of 5 events on the day Christ was crucified.
- The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemeni
- The scourging at the pillar
- The crowning with thorns
- The carrying of the cross
- The crucifixion of Jesus
During the life of Christ, the Pharisees, along with the Scribes, were the religious leaders of the Jews.
The Pharisees were the most numerous and influential of the religious sects of Jesus’s day. The were strict legalists. They stood for the rigid observance of the letter and forms of the Law, and also for the Traditions. There were some good men among them, no doubt, but for the most part they were known for their covetousness, self-righteousness and hypocrisy.
Here’s what Jesus said about the Pharisees:
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,* you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out! You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna?
Matthew 23: 25-33
The Pharisees were self-righteous hypocrites who showed no mercy to Jesus and his followers. They were part of the Sanhedrin, the great legal council in Jerusalem.
With his [Judas Iscariot] assistance, Jesus was arrested on the night before the Passover. The Sanhedrin immediately began violating their rules.
Since the arrest was at night, the indictment should have waited until the next day and taken place before the entire Sanhedrin. Instead, Jesus was first brought before and questioned by Annas who had been the high priest. He was then sent to Caiaphas’ home, where some Sanhedrin members had gathered for an interrogation. This was clearly planned; no one was racing around Jerusalem trying to notify Sanhedrin members to come to Caiaphas’ house. Nighttime and private interrogations were illegal under court rules. Additionally, no one was ever solicited to speak for Jesus, another rule broken by the Sanhedrin.
Finding no chargeable offense, Caiaphas intensified the cross-examination of Jesus, hoping he would incriminate himself. Finally, by the next morning, Jesus was accused of blasphemy when he admitted his divinity and compared himself to God: “But I tell you: From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power’ and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven’” (Mt 26:64). The Jewish penalty for blasphemy was death.
Only the Roman governor (Pilate) could order a death penalty, and the Sanhedrin knew it was unlikely the Romans would issue such a penalty for blasphemy. Pilate would, however, take notice if there was a plot against Rome, which was the charge the Sanhedrin claimed; they accused Jesus of being a self-proclaimed king, the Messiah. The Sanhedrin cunningly twisted the accusation from blasphemy to sedition.
So, you see how these leaders behaved. Which is why I have ruminated over the similarities between them and today’s Progressive Far Left.
Both groups, the Pharisees and the Progressives, lie and bear false witness as a matter of course. Both are totalitarian in their thought processes. Both want to silence anyone with whom they disagree, and both are underhanded and sneaky while doing it. Both break the rules, their own and that of God or society. Both groups are hypocrites, who do seem like a nest of poisonous snakes to anyone who feels their wrath.
From the Gospel of Matthew we see the Pharisees, Chief priests, and religious leaders in action:
The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin* kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward who stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.’” The high priest rose and addressed him, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “You have said so.* But I tell you:
From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power’
and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven.’”
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; what is your opinion?” They said in reply, “He deserves to die!”
The key words and phrases above are: “false witnesses”, and “What need have we of witnesses?” The Sanhedrin broke their own rules by conducting a secret trial on a fellow Jew, they tried their best to obtain false testimony against him, and when that failed and Jesus answered the question, they immediately judged him guilty and said no witnesses were needed. They did not wait for morning, so perhaps other members of the group might be witnesses for Jesus.
There were Pharisees who followed Jesus. One, Nicodemus, visited Jesus in the middle of the night because he was afraid of repercussions from the ones who were determined to kill Jesus (sound familiar?), and another, Joseph of Arimathea, went to Pilate after Jesus was crucified, asked for the body, and buried Jesus in his own tomb.
If you are still reading, you may yourself see the similarities between today’s Pharisees and those at the time of Jesus. This, I believe, is because Progressivism is every bit as much a religion today as Christianity and Judaism are. And the religion of Progressivism is made up of people who do the same sorts of things to today’s Christians, Jews, and any member of any other belief system or religion that conflicts with theirs.
The above was what I meditated upon this morning during the Rosary.
Why did I ponder this today?
It has to do with a very dear friend, Megan Fox. Megan is a fellow author whom I met in my favorite group of authors and other creative people. She’s also a popular columnist at PJ Media. Her articles are trending frequently on PJ, and have been linked on the Drudge report 3 times in recent weeks.
Megan and I became close friends over the past couple of years. We have a lot in common. I am a Roman Catholic, and Megan, who was drawn to the Catholic Faith, asked me questions, to which I hope I gave the correct answers. Perhaps I did, since she ended up converting to Catholicism last Easter.
The two of us and some other close friends talked quietly among ourselves during last year’s presidential primaries and in the lead up to the election of President Trump. Trump has been abused by Pharisees on a daily basis for over a year, as were his supporters. Megan and I and the rest of our band of secret Trump supporters have also been abused by the Progressive Pharisees in tweets and Facebook comments. Another friend was cursed at in a Wawa parking lot because of the MAGA hat she was wearing.
And yes, I did just put Donald Trump in the company of Christians. He is being lied about and false charges have been leveled against him since he announced his candidacy. Yes, he is one of us now, we who love liberty, be we Christians, Jews, or any other American who does not agree with the Progressives. Trump, though I don’t know his religion, acts like a fallen sinner in need of Christ, just like the rest of us believers. This is my opinion.
Megan Fox’s dream come true.
Over the past few months, as her articles became more and more popular, Megan would confide to some of us that she wanted to be mentioned by Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, the great Maha-Rushie, that lovable little fuzzball who presides at the EIB Network’s Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Anti-Leftist studies.(Formerly the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. That’s a story in itself, but for another day).
Megan, like many of us, listens to Rush as often as possible. Megan adores Rush Limbaugh. She even met him in person back in the 1990’s.
Then, on Thursday, it finally happened. Rush chose an article that Megan had written and dedicated a segment of his show to the topic. He quoted almost the entire article on the air, and mentioned Megan’s name repeatedly.
She was ecstatic. So were we, her friends and fellow writers. There’s nothing better than seeing a hard-working person get well deserved publicity, especially when its from someone he/she holds in high regard.
See Megan describe her great day in the video below.
But Megan’s great day took an ugly turn.
She shared her happiness with her family and friends on Facebook. And then a friend of 30 years began posting hurtful comments. Megan removed the comments because they were abusive and out of control. She was worried about her friend’s state of mind. The comments were personal attacks on Limbaugh and Megan herself.
Such things happen way too often these days. Longtime friends and even families are at odds or have parted ways because Hillary Clinton did not become president. Why can’t people act with class anymore?
The mainstream “media” (CNN, NBC, CBS, the NYT, WaPo, etc) have fostered this divide by attacking President Trump’s every move. Ditto Facebook and Google. They are also Pharisees.
Limbaugh himself has been lied about, accused falsely and hated by the Progressives/Pharisees in America for 30 years now with no end in sight. Has anyone ever wondered what it must be like to be him?
Megan (who gave me permission to write about this) confided that she was terribly sad that her longtime friend had attacked her because of a difference in politics. She also asked us to pray for her friend.
But wait… it gets worse.
On Friday, one day after Megan uploaded the video of Rush reading her article on his show to You Tube, the tolerant people who run that site demonetized almost her entire You Tube channel.
On the same day that Rush Limbaugh read my recent column on air, YouTube — in the dead of night — demonetized a large percentage of videos on my channel. My YouTube channel has been around for years with many recordings of very boring village meetings highlighting local Chicago-area corruption. Recently, I started doing reaction videos and comedy and gained a bunch of new subscribers and it’s been fun. I don’t swear (certainly no “F” words) and there’s nothing really controversial unless you count making fun of gender-confused rabid leftists with blue hair “controversial.”
Yesterday, October 5, after Rush read my article on his show, I made a video that included my reaction to him talking about it on the air. It wasn’t up for three hours before my videos started getting the dreaded yellow dollar signs — which means YouTube just took away my ability to be paid for them. YouTube made sure that whatever bump in subscribers or views I got from Rush would not benefit me in any way.
YouTube has been going after politically conservative content creators for a long time. Paul Joseph Watson’s videos have largely been demonetized along with those of Trump-stumping sisters Diamond and Silk and other big-name conservative talkers. Diversity & Comics creator Richard Meyer has received two strikes against his account in the last week. One more will result in his account being deleted and his content lost forever. All he knows is that his channel has been reported for dubious reasons by people who don’t want to be criticized in the comics industry. YouTube shows no desire to right such situations.
In fact, YouTube does not allow anyone to dispute the demonetization strikes unless the video in question receives 1000 views in the next seven days (go watch it—now!). This makes it impossible for anyone without hundreds of thousands of subscribers to have a prayer of being monetized again.
Even an advertisement I made for my book, “Shut Up! The Bizarre War That One Public Library Waged Against the First Amendment” was hit unironically with the YouTube censorship stick. If a video depicting an ad for a book about free speech isn’t allowed, what is? One thing is for sure:
So, this is how things go for some of us. The Left has control of much of the news media, who do their bidding by publishing lies and innuendo that often must be retracted. They control most of the entertainment industries, and huge social media platforms. They are powerful, political, and have totalitarian tendencies, like the Pharisees. They have an agenda which they will do anything to advance, no matter how it might hurt innocent Americans.
They have slandered and doxxed and threatened and even sent death threats to people with whom they disagree. They bear false witness every day, and keep their tactics secret until one day a person wakes up to find their livelihood threatened or taken away.
They are today’s Pharisees.
Yet we who follow the truth, whether we are Christians or not, can take heart in the words of Christ:
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,*
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.
The Pharisees can take a hike. We will keep spreading the truth.
